I hate networking. Those formal three course lunches full of blokes in suits are just not my vibe and I find the worky small talk excruciating. So, I decided to face my fear head on, booking a two day conference full of agency leaders, in Ibiza, courtesy of @agencyhackers.

It was relaxed, fun, incredibly informative and there wasn’t a suit and tie in sight! And the networking didn’t feel like networking, it felt like socialising, bonding over a shared love of sunshine, travel, music, food, our jobs and learning. I’m not saying this approach is for everyone, but when you find the right place and the right people, networking is a breeze.

It’s been a busy but enjoyable start to Easter here, including a day on set with @jacksonsbread, filming its first ever TV campaign. The PR has centred around a search for local people to star in the TVC, and we happened across the wonderful Gaynor and Sean. They met when they were both working at Jacksons Bakery and celebrate their golden wedding anniversary this year ❤️ A truly joyful project to work on, with more to come. The TVC airs next month.

Do petitions work? They’re everywhere aren’t they. And a brilliant way of generating awareness of issues that matter.

During the pandemic, an artist local to us started painting the BT boxes. He’s pretty well known in Leeds, but his work was new to our area and we were so happy! A ray of sunshine in a grim time. Anyway, the Karens at BT painted over his work one night because he didn’t have the correct permissions or whatever, and we were raging.

Not the biggest issue at the time, I realise, but we were not ok. So, I started my first ever online petition and in true, comms style, got a few signatures and some local press coverage (I used a pseudonym, I don’t know why!) As luck would have it, our artwork returned, even better than before!

Now I’m pretty sure there were other conversations at play that retracted the decision, but I think the fact that local people were able to have their say empowered them and made them feel in control.

And, from a PR perspective, they often make the news so in that respect, I’d say they work. A consideration for your next campaign, perhaps?

For a few months, I’ve been working on a glorious project as the first editor of a new magazine called Free From Living, created for the allergy community. One of my first tasks was to interview TV legend, Steph McGovern, about IBS and gut health. Today, I picked up edition three, the last that I’ve edited and wow, what a journey. I’ve worked as a freelance journalist on and off since I left uni and this project has really rekindled that passion. For now, I’m focusing on comms, but always open to writing and editing briefs. I’ve also learnt so much about the free from world too; which is coming in very handy at work, and at home.
